Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 2: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has finally given approval to the proposal to increase the retirement age of the state government employees and teachers.

Although several expert committees reports have recommended it in the past, the Chief Minister had strongly opposed the idea. However, Chandy has given his approval for the proposal a few days ago.

The proposal will not be announced as a cabinet decision. Instead, it will be announced through the state budget to be presented by Finance Minister K.M. Mani. The Chief Minister will give it as a written document to the Finance Minister.

The proposal in the budget will be to increase the retirement age from 56 to 58. Youth organisations are certain to oppose the proposal. Indications say that even the Youth Congress will oppose the proposal.

At the moment, even if the Public Service Commission issues an advice memo, the appointment will be delayed. In this situation, all the youth organisations are likely to oppose the move to increase the retirement age.
